Description

This lecture sheds light on how astronomers determine cosmic distances. It will explain how distances in space are measured using the parallax method, standard candles (Cepheids, supernovae type Ia) and redshift. The accuracy of these methods will be critically scrutinized and the underlying physics and stepwise calibration of the measurement scales will be discussed. The seminar shows that these distance measurements are not used in isolation, but as part of a cosmic distance ladder to determine ever greater distances.
